What To Do If It Rains On Your Wedding Day

Knowing what to do if it rains on your wedding day can make the difference between a stressful morning and a day that still goes exactly as you planned. At Blackstock Country Estate in East Sussex, we love a sunny wedding as much as any couple does. The courtyard, the views across the Cuckmere valley, and the grounds with deer and horses roaming in the background. On a clear day, it’s genuinely hard to beat. But British weather being what it is, we’ve also hosted more than a few weddings where the forecast had other ideas, and the day was wonderful regardless. The secret is a solid contingency and a venue that’s set up for both.

What an Outdoor Wedding at Blackstock Country Estate Looks Like

Blackstock Country Estate sits on 70 acres of East Sussex countryside, set against the rolling South Downs. In good weather, the outdoor areas are a genuine highlight of the day. Outdoor ceremonies are available from May to September, and when the conditions are right, they are spectacular. Guests gather on the terrace and in the courtyard for welcome drinks and canapes, with open views of the Cuckmere valley stretching out behind them. The estate grounds are a favourite with photographers, with horses and llamas often visible in the fields, and wild deer spotted throughout the year.

The Contingency Is Built In

This is one of the most important things to understand when thinking about what to do if it rains on your wedding day. At Blackstock Country Estate, we don’t scramble when the weather changes. We plan for it from the start. Our team monitors forecasts in the days leading up to each wedding and holds internal briefings, so everyone knows what to do if conditions shift.

The Tudor Barn is a licensed ceremony venue with 500-year-old oak beams and large antique cartwheel chandeliers. It’s kept fully set up and ready regardless of the forecast. If the weather means moving indoors, that transition happens smoothly, with no delay and no disruption to your day. The Tudor Barn doesn’t feel like a fallback option. It’s a beautiful room in its own right, and many couples choose it regardless of what the sky is doing.

The layout of the estate also helps enormously. The Tudor Barn, The Granary, and the courtyard are all close together, which means guests aren’t crossing open ground in the rain to get from one part of the venue to another. Our team are on hand to manage those movements efficiently, including helping elderly guests or anyone with young children.

Why Wet Weather Planning Starts At Your Viewing

Knowing what to do if it rains on your wedding day is far easier when you’ve discussed it with your venue well in advance. We always encourage couples to ask about the indoor setup and to come and see it for themselves. Viewings at Blackstock Country Estate are a chance to see both barns properly dressed, not just the outdoor spaces.

It’s also worth talking through which parts of your day have a natural indoor alternative. Welcome reception drinks can move seamlessly inside to the Tudor Barn on a wet weather day, with the ceremony working just as well whether or not there’s sunshine outside. Getting these decisions made early means you’re not having those conversations under pressure on the morning of your wedding.

Rain Doesn’t Have To Mean Delays

Most couples worry that knowing what to do if it rains on your wedding day means accepting that everything will start running behind. In our experience at Blackstock Country Estate, it rarely does. Because the contingency is already in place well before the day, there’s no scrambling around or last-minute decision-making. The team know exactly what to do, and it happens quietly in the background while you focus on your guests.

That said, it’s always sensible to build a small amount of flexibility into your schedule. If you’ve got 20 to 30 minutes of breathing room across the day, a weather change becomes a minor adjustment rather than a problem. Talk to your photographer in advance about which shots they’d prioritise indoors and which outdoor moments are worth waiting for a dry window. A good photographer will have a clear plan either way.

Photography In The Rain Is Better Than You Might Expect

Some of the strongest wedding galleries we’ve seen from Blackstock Country Estate have come from overcast or wet days. The soft, even light that comes with cloudy skies is flattering for portraits in a way that harsh midday sun simply isn’t. Photographers regularly use the Tudor Barn doorways, the large, glazed windows of the Granary, and the covered areas around the estate to create images that are genuinely atmospheric. They may also use the mezzanine to capture unique, candid group photos, providing a high-angle for a cinematic view.

The estate grounds also offer plenty of sheltered and interesting spots for photos, even when it’s raining. If there’s a dry window in the afternoon, your photographer can make the most of the countryside backdrop and the estate’s natural features quickly and without fuss. When thinking about what to do if it rains on your wedding day, the photography side of it is genuinely one of the less worrying parts.

Why The Weather Doesn’t Define Your Day

Out of everything involved in knowing what to do if it rains on your wedding day, this is arguably the most important point. It’s just the weather. The couples who have the best days, rainy or otherwise, tend to be the ones who decided early on that they were going to enjoy themselves regardless. Guests follow the couple’s lead. If you’re relaxed about it, the room feels relaxed.

A wet morning followed by an afternoon of laughter inside a 500-year-old barn, with great food, a good bar, and the people you care about, is still a very good day. We’ve seen it many times at Blackstock Country Estate, and the feedback from those weddings is consistently warm. The weather sets the scene, but it doesn’t write the story.

What To Sort Before The Big Day

Before your wedding, confirm with your venue what the indoor ceremony and reception setup looks like and ask to see it in person. Talk through which outdoor moments have a clear indoor alternative and which you’d happily drop if needed. Ask your photographer which spots they’d use inside and how they’ve handled wet days at the venue before. Build 20 to 30 minutes of flexibility into your day’s timeline, let guests know the venue has a solid indoor option, and brief your wedding party so they can help keep the mood positive if conditions change.
