For most couples planning an autumn wedding in East Sussex, we would recommend October. It gives the best balance of seasonal colour, comfortable daytime temperatures and enough daylight for an early afternoon ceremony and outdoor photographs. September is the better choice if warmer weather and a later sunset matter most. November suits couples who prefer an earlier ceremony and an evening centred around the barns.
There is no month that guarantees dry weather or autumn colour. The best choice depends on the parts of the day that matter most to you, so it helps to compare the likely conditions before choosing a date.
So, what is the best month for an autumn wedding? For the strongest overall balance, October remains our recommendation.
September is the warmest and driest of the three autumn months in this part of East Sussex. Met Office climate averages for Herstmonceux West End record an average daily maximum of 19.1°C and an average minimum of 10.9°C. The month averages 64mm of rain, 9.3 days with at least 1mm of rainfall and almost 160 hours of sunshine.
In the middle of September, sunset near Hellingly is at about 7.10pm. That gives you more flexibility with ceremony times, drinks outside and photographs across the grounds.
The main compromise is the seasonal colour. Some trees may begin to change during September, but much of the landscape can still be green. The timing varies each year according to temperature, rainfall and the types of trees on the estate. If copper, red and gold leaves are central to your plans, October usually gives you a better chance.
September suits couples who want the mildest autumn temperatures, more daylight after the ceremony and more time outside. The landscape may still look closer to late summer than autumn.

At Herstmonceux West End, October has an average daily maximum of 15.3°C and an average minimum of 8.3°C. Average monthly rainfall rises to 100mm, with 12.5 days recording at least 1mm of rain. There are around 115 hours of sunshine across the month.
Autumn colour often builds during October, although there is no fixed peak date. Forestry England explains that the timing and strength of the display depend on the weather. Some years bring earlier colour, while others hold greener leaves for longer. Daylight needs more thought than it does in September. Sunset is at about 6.10pm in the middle of October near Hellingly. The clocks then go back on the last Sunday of the month, bringing sunset an hour earlier. A ceremony at around 1pm generally leaves time for drinks and photographs before the light fades, but your photographer and coordinator can help you set the timings for your exact date.

November is not too late, but it changes the shape of the day. The average daily maximum at Herstmonceux West End is 11.4°C, and the average minimum is 5.2°C. The month averages 106mm of rain, 13.6 days with at least 1mm of rainfall and around 66 hours of sunshine.
By the middle of November, sunset near Hellingly is at about 4.10pm. A noon ceremony allows you to use the available daylight for photographs straight afterwards. The later parts of the reception will take place after dark, so November suits couples who are happy for more of the day to happen indoors.
Early November may still bring autumn colour, but it cannot be promised. By later November, more leaves are likely to have fallen. This can still work well for photographs across the meadows and around the barns, but it is a different look from October.
November suits couples who want an earlier ceremony, more of the celebration indoors and evening lighting to play a larger part. It may also give you more flexibility when asking about remaining dates, although live availability varies.

The shorter days do not prevent you from having outdoor photographs. They simply make the ceremony time more important.
For an October wedding, a practical outline could include a 1pm ceremony, followed by drinks and photographs during the afternoon. The wedding breakfast can then begin while some natural light remains, with the evening reception taking place after dark.
September gives you more room to move those timings later. In November, bringing the ceremony forward to noon or 12.30pm makes better use of the daylight. Your photographer may also recommend taking group photographs first, then using the softer later light for photographs of the two of you.
Check the exact sunset time for your date rather than relying on a monthly estimate. This is particularly important for weddings close to the October clock change.

Autumn weather in East Sussex is often mild but changeable. Rainfall and the number of wet days increase between September and November, so an indoor plan should be part of the decision from the beginning.
