5 Simple Steps to Overcome Wedding Speech Nerves

Delivering a wedding speech can feel like a daunting task. Whether you’re the best man, maid of honour, or proud parent, the pressure to deliver a heartfelt and memorable speech is real.

But don’t worry! With preparation and the right mindset, you can overcome wedding speech nerves and confidently share your words with the room. Here are five easy steps to help you feel confident when it’s your turn to speak.

1. Prepare Thoroughly and Practise Regularly

Preparation is the foundation of any great wedding speech. Start by jotting down key points or anecdotes you want to share. Think about what makes the couple special, your personal connection to them, and any light-hearted humour that fits the tone of the event.

Once you’ve drafted your speech, practise delivering it out loud. Speaking it aloud will help you find your natural rhythm and identify any areas that feel awkward. Rehearse in front of a trusted friend or family member who can provide constructive feedback. The more familiar you are with your speech, the less likely you’ll stumble on the big day.

Cue cards can be a lifesaver – write down bullet points or keywords to guide you. However, avoid over-relying on them. Glancing at your notes occasionally is fine, but your audience will appreciate eye contact and genuine delivery.

2. Embrace Your Wedding Speech Nerves

Feeling nervous is completely normal, even for experienced speakers. The key is to see those nerves as a positive sign – they mean you care about making your speech meaningful. Instead of fighting your anxiety, acknowledge it. Take a few deep breaths to centre yourself before you begin. Remind yourself that everyone in the room is rooting for you.

Visualising success is another great way to ease wedding speech nerves. Close your eyes and imagine yourself delivering your speech with confidence, hearing the laughter at your jokes and seeing the smiles on the couple’s faces. This mental rehearsal can make a huge difference.

3. Speak from the Heart

Authenticity is your greatest asset when delivering a wedding speech. Share personal stories that reflect your unique relationship with the couple. Whether it’s a funny memory, a touching moment, or a lesson you’ve learned from their love, heartfelt tales make your speech memorable.

Don’t worry about being perfect – your audience will value sincerity over polish. If you speak honestly and from the heart, your words will resonate. Remember, this is your chance to celebrate the couple’s love and leave them with a lasting memory of your support.

4. Control Your Breathing and Pacing

When we’re nervous, our breathing tends to become shallow, which can make us feel even more anxious. Combat this by practising deep breathing exercises before and during your speech. Breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold it for four seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth for another four seconds. This simple technique can calm your nerves and steady your voice.

Pacing is equally important. Wedding speech nerves often cause people to rush, but speaking too quickly can make it hard for your audience to follow. Slow down, enunciate clearly, and take natural pauses. These pauses not only help you collect your thoughts but also emphasise your key points and allow the audience to absorb your words.

5. Stay Focused on the Occasion

The most important thing to remember is why you’re giving this speech. It’s not about delivering a flawless performance, it’s about celebrating the couple and their love. Shifting your focus away from your nerves and towards the joy of the occasion can make all the difference.

Look for friendly faces in the audience, especially the couple or close family members. Their encouraging smiles will remind you that your words are appreciated. Enjoy the moment, and don’t be afraid to let your emotions show – this is a day filled with love, after all.
