5 Ways to Spice Up Your Wedding

Looking for some unique ideas to help you spice up your wedding? We’ve got you! Here are some things you might not have thought about adding/changing to make the big day stand out!

1. Alternative Cakes

With the average cost of a wedding cake being between £400-500, (although they are really lovely!) why not think about doing something a bit different?

Some of our couples have had things ranging from a cheese wheel cake, to Colin the Caterpillars! Not only might it cut the cost down, but it is also different and more fun!

Even other sweet treats, like doughnuts, can go down well with guests – check out the ones in the image below from Dillies Doughnuts!

2. Tie the Knot – Literally

You’ve heard of the phrase ‘to tie the knot’ to mean ‘to get married’, but did you know this actually has an interesting origin which you could use to make your wedding a little different?

Originating in around 7000 B.C, this pre-Christian tradition where couple’s hands are bound together (called Handfasting) symbolises their commitment to each other. In this practice, couples join opposite hands and face each other, while a cloth is tied around their hands and arms – hence, ‘tying the knot’. This can be done at any time during the ceremony, but it is popularly accompanied by words and poetry, making it a great and unique feature to do while you read your vows.

As this is not legally binding, the tying of the knot can be performed by anyone, so you could chose a close friend or family member to do this for you, making it a personal and symbolic tradition!

3. First Look

Typically, the bridesmaids watch and help the bride get ready, but have you ever thought about switching it up? Bridesmaids can be there for hair and makeup, but then ask them to leave the room and shut their eyes while someone else helps with your dress. The reveal makes for great photos and videos, a memorable, intimate moment, and a few (happy) tears!

Additionally, this can be done with the happy couple. Normally, the first time they see each other is at the altar, but a trend that is increasing in popularity is doing a private first look. Instead of the reveal being in front of everyone, walking down the aisle, you can share a private, intimate memory where you reveal yourselves to each other before the ceremony. Again, this makes fantastic photos and is something you’ll remember forever. It also gives you the chance to embrace each other before the big moment!

People may also want to do this with their mother and father too.

4. Candids are the best photos

One of the biggest stress factors on a wedding day is the worry that things won’t be perfect. This is a natural and normal fear, it is a huge day and you don’t want anything to go wrong.

However, consider your definition of perfect. A lot of brides say they practised a ‘soft smile’ for weeks before their wedding for their pictures, but they were so happy on the day that they forgot all about it! Surely this genuine happiness to be marrying the love of your life is more perfect than everything being posed and perfectly placed. Embrace the fun side of your wedding!

The best images are the candid ones. The ones where the couple and guests are laughing together, forgetting the photographer is even there. Check out these beautiful images which aren’t posed, but rather show the couple’s real, raw love for each other and the fun everyone is having.

5. Finally, embrace YOU!

Spice up your wedding by adding personal touches! This will make it feel more personalised and unique. Whether it is wearing your favourite colours, embracing your culture, having things embroidered with initials or just adding small things to the day which represent you, the couple, this is a lovely way to make your wedding feel more like YOUR wedding!
