How Long Does It Take to Plan a Wedding?

Giving yourselves 12 to 18 months allows time to visit venues, compare suppliers and organise the details. But how long does it take to plan a wedding when you have less time? Six months or less can work if your venue, registrars and chosen suppliers are available and you can meet the legal requirements for your ceremony. Your budget, guest numbers and flexibility with dates will help you decide how much time you need.

At Blackstock Country Estate, our wedding coordinators help you plan your day at our barn wedding venue in Hellingly, East Sussex. With catering provided in-house, you also have one fewer supplier to find.

How Long Are Most Couples Engaged?

Couples in Bridebook’s 2026 UK Wedding Report were engaged for an average of 23.8 months. Based on information from more than 7,000 UK couples, the report found that 68 per cent of engagements lasted less than two years.

That doesn’t mean you need two years to organise your wedding. Some couples leave time to save before making bookings, while others start looking at venues straight away. Once you have confirmed your venue and ceremony date, you can start booking suppliers and working towards the day.

What Does an 18-Month Timeline Allow?

Starting 18 months or more ahead can give you more choice of venues and suppliers, particularly if you have your heart set on a summer Saturday. We recommend starting your venue search around 18 to 24 months ahead for a Saturday between May and September.

You have time to compare what venues include before committing, then book the photographer, florist and other suppliers you most want once your venue and ceremony date are confirmed.

If you’re hoping to marry outdoors, ask about wet-weather arrangements when viewing. At Blackstock, outdoor ceremonies can take place in our grounds between May and September, weather permitting.

Is 12 Months Enough to Plan a Wedding?

Yes, twelve months can be enough to plan a wedding, particularly if you’re flexible about the date. Ask venues about midweek dates, Fridays, Sundays and weddings between October and April. You may have more options than for a summer Saturday, although availability will vary.

If you’re having a civil ceremony, check registrar availability alongside your venue before confirming the date. Then prioritise your main suppliers and send save the dates so guests can arrange travel and accommodation. A wedding planning checklist can help you keep track of what needs doing and when.

Can You Plan a Wedding in Six or Three Months?

Six months can be enough if your venue and main suppliers are available, and you can meet the requirements for your ceremony. Three months can work too, but leaves less room for delays. Start by asking venues which dates are available and, for a civil ceremony, checking registrar availability before committing.

You must usually give notice at least 29 days before your ceremony. East Sussex requires at least six weeks and recommends three to four months where possible. If your notice may need Home Office approval, East Sussex advises giving notice at least 12 weeks before your ceremony.

Contact your local register office early to check appointment availability and the requirements that apply to you. You’ll also need to book your registrars separately from your venue.

Which Decisions and Bookings Need the Most Notice?

Prioritise your venue, registrars for a civil ceremony and any suppliers you would be disappointed to miss. Once your venue and ceremony date are confirmed, contact your preferred photographer, florist and entertainment suppliers to check availability. Ask about deposits and payment deadlines before booking.

You can also explore wedding suppliers recommended by our team.

Some details are agreed nearer the day. At Blackstock, we need your final guest numbers six weeks before your wedding, with the final invoice settled four weeks before. Your seating plan and arrangements for the day are confirmed at your Final Details meeting.

How Can Flexibility With Dates and Suppliers Help?

If you’ve found a venue you love, ask which dates are available before settling on a particular day. Considering a weekday, Friday or Sunday wedding may give you more options. Check with the guests you most want there, especially if they would need time off work.

You could also consider a twilight wedding if you prefer a later ceremony followed by an evening celebration. At Blackstock, ceremonies start from 4pm, with use of the Tudor Barn and grounds. Ask our team which dates are available.

The same flexibility helps with suppliers. If your first-choice photographer, florist or band is already booked, our team can introduce you to alternatives who know the venue.
